Whether you stay or leave a violent relationship have a Safety Plan, even if you don’t think you will ever need it.
IF YOU STAY, STAY SAFE
- Listen to your instincts-do whatever it takes to stay safe.
- Plan how you will get away safely no matter where you are.
- Be careful not to “give away” your safety plan to your abuser.

IF YOU LEAVE, STAY SAFE AND BE PREPARED
- Prepare a bag of extra clothing and keep in a safe place.
- Have an extra set of keys made and keep them in a safe place.
- Have a copy of any important documents and keep in a safe place.

WHEN YOU LEAVE, STAY SAFE
- Teach your children to dial 911.
- Share your safety plan with others you trust.
- Talk to an advocate about home safety options.
- Talk to an advocate about getting a protection order.
- Review your safety plan often. Change it if you need to.
